What is query fan-out?
Query fan-out is how Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews split one question into many related searches, then combine the results into one answer.
Updated
Query fan-out is the technique Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use to answer a question: the system splits one query into many related searches across subtopics and data sources, runs them together, and builds a single answer from the results. Google’s own wording is “issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources.”
Why does query fan-out matter for SEO?
Because the AI is not only searching for the words someone typed. A page can be cited for a sub-question it answers well, even when it does not rank for the original query. That rewards pages that cover a topic’s follow-up questions clearly, one answer per section, and makes thin pages built around a single keyword less useful.
Example
For the question “is a heat pump worth it in a cold climate”, a fan-out might also search for:
- heat pump efficiency below freezing
- heat pump vs gas furnace running costs
- cold-climate heat pump models
- heat pump rebates
A page that answers two or three of those directly, with numbers and sources, has more chances to be linked than one that only restates the question.
How do I optimize for it?
- Find the real follow-up questions: your Search Console queries, People Also Ask boxes and customer emails.
- Give each one a question-style heading with a short, direct answer under it.
- Link related pages to each other so the whole cluster is easy to crawl (see internal linking).
ChatGPT search and Perplexity also run several searches for one prompt, but “query fan-out” is Google’s name for its version. Related: AI Mode, search intent.
