Widths are estimates from Arial's character widths. Google publishes no limit and cuts by pixel width, so the real cut-off can move by a few characters. Google also rewrites many titles and most descriptions to match the search.

How the snippet preview measures
Google cuts titles and descriptions by width on screen, not by characters, and does not publish the limits (its title link guidance only says titles are truncated to fit the device). This tool measures your text with the character widths of Arial, the font of Google's desktop results: 20 pixels for titles and 14 for descriptions. It then compares the width with limits measured by SEO tool makers:
- Desktop title: about 580 px.
- Desktop description: about 920 px (two lines).
- Mobile title: mobile results wrap titles over more lines; this preview allows about 720 px.
- Mobile description: about 680 px.
When text is too wide, the preview cuts it at the last whole word that fits and adds "...", as Google does. Real results vary by a few characters with browser, device and font, so leave a little room. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Writing a snippet that wins the click
- Lead with the search. Put the words people type first in the title, and your brand last, where a cut costs least.
- One page, one promise. Every page needs its own title. Duplicates are the most common reason Google rewrites them.
- Answer, then invite. Open the description with the answer or the offer, then give one concrete reason to click: a price, a time, a guarantee.
- Write for people. Repeating keywords or writing in capitals reads as spam and is a common trigger for rewrites.
To see the title and description a live page has now, along with other on-page problems, run the SEO and AEO checker. And for pages that already appear in Google but are rarely clicked, the fix is often the snippet: SEO Rank Fixer finds those pages in your Search Console data and drafts better titles from the searches they show up for.
Common questions
How long should a title tag be?
Google does not set a character limit; it cuts titles that are too wide for the result, which on desktop is roughly 580 to 600 pixels, or about 50 to 60 characters. Wide letters like W and M use more room than i and l, which is why a pixel estimate is more useful than a character count.
How long should a meta description be?
Roughly 150 to 160 characters fits on desktop (about 920 pixels across two lines); mobile often shows less. Put the answer and the reason to click in the first 120 characters so the important part survives on any screen.
Why does Google show a different title or description from mine?
Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords, the same across many pages or a poor match for the page, and it often picks a passage from the page as the description when that answers the search better. A clear, specific title and a description that answers the search make rewrites less likely.
Do title and description length affect rankings?
Length itself is not a ranking factor. The title's words do help Google understand the page, and a cut-off or rewritten snippet can lose clicks, which is what this preview helps you avoid.
