What the generator does
It reads your robots.txt and sitemap (or /sitemap.xml when robots.txt names none), picks your main pages (the shallowest addresses first, which are usually your services, products and key guides), reads each page's title and meta description, and writes a draft in the llmstxt.org format: your site's name as the H1, your homepage description as the summary, and a list of links with a line on each. It skips pages your robots.txt closes to crawlers and reads at most 25 pages. It is the same builder SEO Rank Fixer uses inside the app.
The draft is a starting point. A good llms.txt is short and edited by someone who knows the site:
# Acme Plumbing > Emergency and planned plumbing in Leeds, UK. Open 24/7, fixed prices, > Gas Safe registered engineers. ## Services - [Emergency plumber](https://acmeplumbing.co.uk/emergency): Within the hour, any time - [Boiler repair](https://acmeplumbing.co.uk/boilers): Most makes, fixed-price diagnosis ## Optional - [About us](https://acmeplumbing.co.uk/about): Who we are and where we work
Does llms.txt work? An honest answer
Short version: it is cheap to add, but nobody has shown it changes how AI assistants find or cite a site. The evidence so far:
- Google's John Mueller compared it to the old keywords meta tag in April 2025 (Search Engine Journal) and wrote in June 2025 that "no AI system currently uses llms.txt" (his post on Bluesky, Search Engine Roundtable).
- No major AI company has said its crawlers read llms.txt at scale. The crawler documentation from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity covers robots.txt and does not mention it. Some of these companies publish an llms.txt for their own developer docs, which is not the same as reading yours.
- Shopify added a default
/llms.txtto storefronts in spring 2026, then within weeks made/agents.mdits main discovery file instead (Shopify developer forum). Conventions in this area are still moving.
So: add one if you like. It takes minutes, costs nothing, and may matter if AI tools start reading it. But spend your effort first on what clearly matters: that AI crawlers are not blocked (test it with the AI crawler checker), and that your pages answer real questions in plain words.
After you upload it
Run the llms.txt checker to confirm the file is served as text, follows the format and that its links work. Revisit it when you add or remove important pages; an llms.txt full of dead links is worse than none.
Common questions
What is llms.txt?
A plain markdown file at the root of a site (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that gives AI tools a short summary of the site and a list of links to its most useful pages. It was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org. Only the H1 title is required; a summary and sections of links are the useful parts.
Does llms.txt help my site show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
There is no evidence that it does today. Google's John Mueller has said no AI system currently uses it, and none of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Perplexity documents reading it when crawling. What decides whether AI assistants cite you is whether their crawlers can read your pages and whether those pages answer questions well.
Where do I upload llms.txt?
In the top folder of your site, so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, next to robots.txt. On WordPress, an SEO plugin or a file manager in your hosting panel can do it; on hosted builders, look for a setting for custom root files.
What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?
robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch, and the big AI and search crawlers obey it. llms.txt is an optional guide that suggests what is worth reading; it grants or blocks nothing. If robots.txt blocks an AI crawler, an llms.txt will not let it in.
What is llms-full.txt?
A companion convention: one file containing the full text of the key pages, so a tool can load everything at once. It suits documentation sites. For most business sites, a short llms.txt is enough.
