How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT
Get your business recommended by ChatGPT: allow OAI-SearchBot, state clear facts, earn third-party mentions, and measure. A full 2026 playbook.
Updated
To get your business recommended by ChatGPT in 2026, make sure OpenAI's search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) can read your site, publish clear pages that state what you do, where and for whom, and earn mentions on the third-party pages ChatGPT reads when it searches: review sites, directories, comparison articles and community threads. ChatGPT names businesses it can find, understand and see confirmed by others; there is no form to submit and no way to pay for a place in the answer.
This is the full playbook. If you already rank well on Google and ChatGPT still names your competitors, start with the diagnostic checklist in why ChatGPT recommends your competitors, not you, then come back here for the fixes.
How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?
ChatGPT answers in one of two ways, and each one draws on a different pool of information:
- From what the model already knows. Without a web search, ChatGPT relies on its training data. Brands that were widely written about before the model's training cutoff are named more often and described more confidently. You influence this slowly, through the same broad web presence that helps everything else.
- From a live web search. For most "best X near me" or "which tool should I use for Y" questions, ChatGPT searches the web, reads a set of pages and writes an answer with citations. This is where you can make the biggest difference quickly.
When ChatGPT searches, it typically rewrites the question into several narrower searches (often called query fan-out), reads the results, and combines them. A recommendation is usually a synthesis: if three of the pages it reads list the same five plumbers, those five are likely to appear in the answer. That is why your own website alone is rarely enough. ChatGPT is looking for agreement across sources.
Which OpenAI crawlers matter, and what does each one do?
OpenAI documents three crawlers on its bots page. They are controlled separately in robots.txt, and mixing them up is the most common reason a site is invisible in ChatGPT.
| User agent | What OpenAI says it does | If you block it |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features. | Your pages are not shown in ChatGPT search answers (they can still appear as a plain navigational link). |
| GPTBot | Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation models. | Your content should not be used for training. Search visibility is not affected. |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits a page when a ChatGPT user or a custom GPT asks it to. | OpenAI notes robots.txt rules may not apply to these user-initiated visits; it does not decide search eligibility. |
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt change for its systems to adjust. A setup that keeps you visible in ChatGPT search while opting out of training looks like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
User-agent: *
Allow: /
Sitemap: https://www.example.com/sitemap.xmlWhether to allow GPTBot is a business decision, not a technical one. Allowing it may help future models know your brand without searching; blocking it keeps your text out of training. Either way, OAI-SearchBot must be allowed.
Does ChatGPT use Bing to find businesses?
Partly. OpenAI describes ChatGPT search as combining its own crawler and index with third-party search providers. Its help page for business workspaces says ChatGPT may share disassociated search queries with the Bing search engine to return web results. OpenAI has never published how much of an answer comes from each source.
Independent studies disagree on how closely ChatGPT's citations track Bing rankings, which is itself useful to know:
- Seer Interactive (February 2025) matched over 87% of about 500 citations to Bing's top organic results for the same question, against 56% for Google.
- Ahrefs (August 2025) ran 15,000 long-tail prompts and found only about 8% of ChatGPT's citations ranked in Bing's or Google's top 10 for the original prompt.
The likely reason for the gap is fan-out: ChatGPT searches for narrower phrasings than the question a person typed, so the pages it cites rank for those sub-queries, not for the original prompt. The practical lesson is the same either way. Make sure Bing can index you (submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools and use IndexNow), and cover the specific sub-questions a buyer asks, not just the head term. Our guide on getting a new site indexed fast in Google and Bing walks through both.
What makes ChatGPT confident enough to name a business?
Language models name what they can describe without contradiction. Three kinds of evidence build that confidence, roughly in order of how much you control them.
1. Your own pages state the facts plainly
A page that says "We are a family-run emergency plumber in Columbus, Ohio, open 24 hours, service calls from $99" can be quoted. A page that says "We deliver best-in-class solutions" cannot. For every service or product, make sure there is one page that answers: what it is, who it is for, where you offer it, what it costs (or how pricing works), and why someone picks you over the alternatives. Keep names, addresses and phone numbers identical everywhere.
2. Structured data confirms who you are
Schema.org markup does not get you recommended by itself, and OpenAI has not said ChatGPT reads it. It does make your entity unambiguous to every system that does parse it, including search engines that ChatGPT's providers rely on. Add Organization (or LocalBusiness) markup to your homepage, with sameAs links to your profiles elsewhere, following Google's Organization structured data guidelines:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Organization",
"name": "Example Plumbing LLC",
"url": "https://www.example.com/",
"logo": "https://www.example.com/logo.png",
"description": "24-hour emergency plumber serving Columbus and central Ohio.",
"sameAs": [
"https://www.linkedin.com/company/example-plumbing",
"https://www.facebook.com/exampleplumbing",
"https://www.trustpilot.com/review/example.com"
],
"contactPoint": {
"@type": "ContactPoint",
"telephone": "+1-614-555-0100",
"contactType": "customer service"
}
}
</script>Check the markup with our free schema checker before you rely on it; broken JSON-LD is ignored silently.
3. Other sites say the same thing about you
This is the factor with the most evidence behind it. In Ahrefs' analysis of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with how often a brand appeared in Google's AI Overviews (0.664), ahead of branded anchor text (0.527) and branded search volume (0.392). That study measured AI Overviews, not ChatGPT, and correlation is not cause, but it matches how answer engines work: they summarize what the web agrees on.
Where should your business be mentioned?
Look at what ChatGPT already cites for your category. Ask it your customers' questions with search on and open every cited source. Those pages are your target list. For most businesses they fall into the groups below.
| Type of source | Examples | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Comparison and "best of" articles | "Best CRM for small agencies", "Top 10 dentists in Austin" | Ask to be considered, offer a trial or facts the author can check; never pay for fake reviews. |
| Review platforms | Google reviews, Trustpilot, G2, Capterra, Yelp, Tripadvisor | Ask real customers for reviews; reply to them. Volume and recency both show. |
| Industry directories and associations | Trade bodies, chambers of commerce, niche directories | Claim and complete every listing with the same name, address and description. |
| Community discussions | Reddit, Quora, specialist forums | Answer questions honestly as yourself; do not astroturf. |
| Press and podcasts | Local news, trade publications, guest appearances | Pitch real stories: data, launches, expert comments. |
| Maps and local listings | Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect | Keep categories, hours and services current. |
SEO Rank Fixer's Get listed checklist gives each site a list of trusted places to be listed for its type, and checks which listings link back. Local businesses should also read our guide to what AI search cites for dentists, law firms and plumbers.
How do you make your pages easy for ChatGPT to quote?
The same habits that win featured snippets help here. Answer engines lift short, self-contained passages.
- Put the direct answer to the page's main question in the first two or three sentences, before any background.
- Use question-style subheadings that match how people ask ("How much does an emergency plumber cost in Columbus?").
- Give numbers, names and conditions instead of adjectives: prices, opening hours, service areas, integrations, delivery times.
- Use tables for comparisons and specs; they survive extraction better than prose.
- Add an FAQ for the questions customers really ask, and mark it up if your platform supports it.
- Show who wrote or reviewed the page and when it was last updated.
- Make sure the content is in the HTML, not loaded only by JavaScript after the page renders. Many AI crawlers do not run scripts.

What blocks ChatGPT from reading your site?
Robots.txt is only one gate. Check all of these:
- Firewall and bot protection. CDNs and security plugins can block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them. Cloudflare, for example, offers one-click AI crawler blocking. See is Cloudflare blocking ChatGPT and Claude from your site?
- Noindex. OpenAI says a noindex meta tag keeps a page out of surfaced results, but only if OAI-SearchBot is allowed to crawl the page and see the tag.
- JavaScript-only content. If your service list or prices appear only after scripts run, a crawler that reads raw HTML sees an empty page.
- Login walls and geo-blocks. Anything behind a sign-in or blocked by country is invisible to crawlers.
Our free AI crawler checker reads your robots.txt and shows which AI bots are allowed, and the robots.txt tester lets you test a single rule before you publish it.
Does llms.txt help ChatGPT recommend you?
There is no evidence that it does. OpenAI does not mention llms.txt in its crawler or publisher documentation, and llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard any major engine has committed to. Publishing one is harmless and takes minutes (our llms.txt generator builds one from your sitemap), but do it after the steps above, not instead of them. We review the evidence in does llms.txt actually work?
How do you measure whether ChatGPT recommends you?
AI answers change from one run to the next, so treat measurement like polling, not like checking a rank.
- Write 10 to 20 prompts your customers actually use, mixing broad ("best accounting software for freelancers") and specific ("invoicing app for freelancers that handles sales tax in several states").
- Run each with web search on, in a fresh chat, and record whether you are named, whether you are cited (linked), and which competitors and sources appear.
- Repeat on a schedule, weekly or monthly, and compare share of answers over time rather than any single response.
- In your analytics, look for referrals from
chatgpt.com. Many ChatGPT links carryutm_source=chatgpt.com, but not all of them, and app traffic often arrives as direct, so referral numbers undercount. - Track the cited sources too. If the same comparison article keeps appearing, getting into that article is your next job.
SEO Rank Fixer's AI visibility check (on the Pro plan) runs your saved prompts in ChatGPT and Claude with live web search and shows whether each answer names or cites you, and which sites it points to instead.
A 30-day plan to get recommended by ChatGPT
| Week | Focus | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Access: robots.txt, firewall, noindex, JavaScript rendering, Bing Webmaster Tools | OAI-SearchBot and Bingbot can fetch your key pages; sitemap submitted to Google and Bing. |
| Week 2 | Facts: one clear page per service or product, Organization or LocalBusiness markup | Each page answers what, who, where, how much and why you, in the first paragraph. |
| Week 3 | Presence: claim listings, ask customers for reviews, contact authors of cited comparison articles | You are listed on the sources ChatGPT already cites for your category. |
| Week 4 | Measurement: fixed prompt set, baseline share of answers, referral tracking | You have a baseline to compare against next month. |
What doesn't work
- Stuffing pages with "ChatGPT recommends us" or hidden text aimed at AI. It is easy to detect and contradicts what other sources say.
- Buying fake reviews or self-written "best of" lists on throwaway domains. Review platforms remove them, and it is unlawful in many places.
- Mass-producing near-identical location or comparison pages. Search engines treat them as doorway pages, and they dilute the clear facts you want quoted.
- Expecting a quick fix for the model's built-in knowledge. That only changes with new model versions.
The businesses ChatGPT recommends tend to be the ones a well-informed friend would recommend: easy to find, clear about what they do, and spoken well of in public. The work is ordinary, but it compounds, and it improves your Google rankings at the same time. Common questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not in the organic answer. OpenAI says product results in ChatGPT are chosen independently and are not ads. ChatGPT does show ads, but OpenAI keeps them separate from the results it picks; being named in the answer is earned through crawl access, clear pages and what other sites say about you.
How long does it take for ChatGPT to start recommending my business?
Crawl access changes take about a day: OpenAI says its systems adjust to a robots.txt update in roughly 24 hours. Earning mentions on review sites, directories and comparison articles takes weeks to months, and changes to what the model knows without searching only arrive with new model versions.
Do I need to block or allow GPTBot to show up in ChatGPT?
Search visibility depends on OAI-SearchBot, not GPTBot. You can block GPTBot (training) and still appear in ChatGPT search answers, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed. Allowing GPTBot only affects whether future models may learn from your pages.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing results?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses its own crawler and index together with third-party search providers, and its help pages name Bing among them. It has never said how much each source contributes, so being indexed in Bing and allowing OAI-SearchBot are both worth doing.
Is llms.txt needed to get recommended by ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI does not document llms.txt as a signal for ChatGPT search. It is cheap to publish and does no harm, but robots.txt access, indexable pages and third-party mentions matter far more.
How do I check whether ChatGPT recommends my business?
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, with search on, in a logged-out or fresh session, and note who it names and which pages it cites. Repeat the same prompts over time, because answers vary from run to run. SEO Rank Fixer's AI visibility check does this for saved prompts in ChatGPT and Claude.
