What is LLM visibility?
LLM visibility is how often AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude mention, recommend or cite your brand when people ask questions in your market.
Updated
LLM visibility (also called AI visibility) is how often large language model assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity mention, recommend or link your brand when people ask questions in your market. It is the AI-answer counterpart of rankings in classic search.
How is LLM visibility measured?
There is no official report from any AI company, so it is measured by asking the assistants directly and recording what they say:
- Write the prompts your customers would type, such as “best CRM for a small real estate team”.
- Run each prompt in each assistant, with web search on where the assistant offers it.
- Record whether your brand is named, whether your site is linked as a source, and which competitors appear instead.
- Repeat on a schedule, because answers change from run to run and model to model.
The share of those answers that include you is your visibility; compared with competitors, it becomes AI share of voice.
Mention vs citation: what is the difference?
A mention is your name in the answer text. A citation is a link to one of your pages as a source. You can be mentioned without a link (the model knew of you from training) or linked without being recommended (your page was used for a fact).
What improves it?
- Letting the AI search crawlers in. A site that blocks OAI-SearchBot cannot be cited in ChatGPT search.
- Pages that answer buyers’ questions plainly, with specific facts, prices and comparisons.
- Being described consistently on the third-party sites assistants read: reviews, directories, forums, press.
Example
If you run 20 prompts about project management tools in ChatGPT and your product is named in 6 answers, your mention rate for that prompt set is 30%. SEO Rank Fixer runs this check for ChatGPT and Claude with live web search and shows who they point to instead.
