What is AI share of voice?
AI share of voice is your brand's share of the mentions or citations in AI answers for a set of prompts, compared with your competitors.
Updated
AI share of voice is your brand’s share of all brand mentions (or citations) in AI assistant answers for a fixed set of prompts, compared with your competitors. If assistants name brands 50 times across your prompts and 10 of those are you, your AI share of voice is 20%.
How do you calculate AI share of voice?
The formula is the same one marketers use for ads and social media, applied to AI answers:
AI share of voice = your mentions ÷ mentions of every tracked brand × 100
A worked example for 25 prompts about running shoes, run once in one assistant:
| Brand | Mentions | Share of voice |
|---|---|---|
| Brand A | 18 | 36% |
| Brand B | 14 | 28% |
| You | 10 | 20% |
| Brand C | 8 | 16% |
The numbers above are illustrative, not data about any real brands.
What should you count?
- Mentions: the brand is named in the answer.
- Citations: the brand’s site is linked as a source (see AI citation).
- Position: named first, or buried in a list of ten.
Keep the prompt set, assistants and settings fixed between runs, or the trend means nothing.
Why is it noisy?
AI answers vary between runs, models, locations and whether web search is on. One run is a sample, not a ranking. Track the same prompts over weeks and look at the direction, not a single number.
